Enter a 17-character VIN. You get the factory build data, every NHTSA recall campaign for that model year, owner complaint counts, and crash-test ratings, all from official US government databases, free. Below the results we explain what this check cannot tell you and where a paid history report fits in.
- Year, make, model, trim, body style
- Engine, drivetrain, fuel, assembly plant
- NHTSA recall campaigns for this model year
- Owner complaints and crash-test ratings
- Accident and damage history
- Odometer readings and rollback evidence
- Title brands (salvage, flood, lemon), liens, theft records
- Whether recalls were actually repaired on this car

The history of this specific car
Everything above describes the model. None of it says what happened to this car after it left the factory. That lives in insurance, auction, DMV title, and service records, which are only available through a paid vehicle history report. A full report typically adds:
- Reported accidents, damage severity, and airbag deployments
- Odometer readings over time, the way rollbacks get caught
- Title brands: salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon, junk
- Theft records, liens, and number of owners
- Auction and import history, including US-to-Europe exports

Questions about this check
Is this a real vehicle history report?
No. It is a free decode of what the VIN encodes at the factory, plus the recall, complaint, and safety-rating databases NHTSA publishes for that model year. It says nothing about accidents, mileage, or title status of the individual car. A history report is a separate, paid product.
Where does the data come from?
Four public NHTSA databases: the vPIC decoder, the recalls database, the owner-complaints database, and the New Car Assessment Program safety ratings. We query them live in your browser; nothing is stored on our site.
Why does the recall list show recalls that may not apply?
NHTSA publishes recalls by make, model, and model year, not by individual VIN. A campaign may cover only some build dates or trims, and it may already have been repaired on the car you are looking at. To confirm for a specific VIN, use the NHTSA recall lookup or ask a franchised dealer.
The decoder returned a warning or blank fields. Is the VIN fake?
Not necessarily. Older vehicles, some imports, and low-volume manufacturers have incomplete records in vPIC. A warning about the check digit is a stronger signal: North American VINs since 1981 must pass it. If a US-market VIN fails the check digit, treat the listing with suspicion.
Do you store the VINs people enter?
No. The lookup runs in your browser directly against NHTSA’s servers. We do not log, store, or sell VINs.
Do you get paid if I buy a history report?
Yes, if you buy through the link on this page or use the code VINVEST. carVertical pays that commission, not you: the link and the code both take 20% off your price. We disclose it here and next to every such link on the site.
